Event Overview

Catch up on Engage 2024 here

For 17 years, IAB Engage has been synonymous with inspiration, education, and networking – and this year we added joy to the mix. We brought our flagship event to the brand-new Soho Place Theatre Tuesday 4 June, for a half-day celebration of all things digital, as we took a cue from our Chief Digital Cheerleader, Joy.

From the Joy of Connection to the Joy of Collaboration, the Joy of Weird to the Joy of Impact – guests heard from some of the industry's biggest names about why they’re unapologetically optimistic about the future of digital, and why we should be too.

Packed full of networking moments with industry leaders, bags of inspiration for your campaigns and speaker slots jam-packed with innovation and creativity from the likes of Bauer Media Advertising, EssenceMediacom, Good-Loop and more, Engage 2024 allowed guests to rediscover the joy of digital at the biggest event in the digital advertising calendar.

Welcome & The Joy of Ads

It’s showtime at Soho Place Theatre! Kicking off Engage 2024, the IAB UK’s CMO James Chandler sets the scene for our journey into the joyful world of digital advertising. Discover why ads aren’t just noise, but the heartbeat of creativity and joy, bringing brands to life as stories and art. As James shares some of his favourite ads, this session is your front-row seat for ‘curtain up’ on the Joy of Digital.

James Chandler, CMO, IAB UK

09:25
The Joy of The Weird

In this talk, we'll dive into the fascinating realm of Internet communities to explore why brands should embrace the joy of the weird that the digital world fosters. From extreme dishwasher loading to “Bread Tube”, to Witch Tok and everything in between. From communities built around obscure hobbies to forums celebrating the most specific of interests, the internet serves as a pivotal point of connection where every individual can find their tribe, free from the constraints of geography or societal norms. We'll discuss how, in a world that can often seem regimented and intolerant to divergence, the internet has become a sanctuary for the unique, the bizarre, the joyful and the 'weird'. We’ll also examine the positive impact communities have on individual identity and confidence, by giving people the freedom to be their most authentic selves. And we will discuss how brands can play a valuable role in communities, how they can find community entry points. And crucially, how do brands maintain their sense of self as they enter into the joyfully weird world of communities?

Geoff de Burca, Chief Strategy Officer & Lindsey Jordan, Head of Creative Strategy, EssenceMediacom

09:40
The Joy of Impact

In this session, Chloe Davies will share insights on ‘The Joy of Impact,’ drawing from her agency and volunteering background, as well as the global initiatives of It Takes A Village Collective. She will discuss the ‘We Can’t All Be Lying’ global insight study and unveil the 2028 mission aiming for 1 in 5 individuals in Adland to be Black women. Join Chloe as she navigates through her rich experiences and demonstrative impact, offering a glimpse into the transformative power of collective action and the pursuit of meaningful change in industries worldwide.

Chloe Davies, Founder & CEO, It Takes A Village Collective

09:55
The Joy of Sound

This session will be an experiential sonic tour through the why and how of an AI Audio strategy for advertisers. We'll cover content creation, speech delivery, production refinement and delivery, all the way to where it can have the greatest impact. The session will showcase how advertisers can utilise any AI Audio tools to level up their sonic brand identity and audio production, from Text-to-Speech, to Speech-to-Speech, Voice Cloning and automated workflows.

Sam Crowther, Creative Director , AudioStack

10:10
The Joy of Collaboration

More efficient, effective, and sustainable advertising is within our reach, but there’s work to be done in order to get there. The industry needs to reorient around the right performance metrics, leverage accurate carbon emissions measurement, and ensure the standards we set and follow are high enough to turn our vision into reality.

Scope3’s Anne Coghlan will challenge the audience to embrace the power of collective action while painting a picture of how those efforts will help advertising work better for marketers, media owners and consumers. Through ongoing collaboration, the future of media and advertising is brighter than ever.

Anne Coghlan, Co-Founder and COO, Scope3

10:25
The Joy of Creativity

Imagine a world where every campaign sparks joy not just in the minds of those who create it, but also in the hearts of those who experience it. This session will explore the very essence of brand perceptions and emotional responses to different creative types, for they hold the key to unlocking joy and outcomes like never before. Join us on a journey to explore what creative elements wield the greatest influence over attention and brand outcomes.

The Joy of Productivity

Forget toxic productivity, this is joyful productivity. In a world where every second business book offers increasingly impractical ways to increase our productivity – highlights include things like getting up at 3am or simply turning your phone off – does productivity have to be so brutal, or is there another way? In this session, vlogger and researcher Christine Armstrong explores how to increase productivity, without losing your mind in the process.

Christine Armstrong, Researcher, author and vlogger

11:30
The Joy of Reclaiming Good

It’s an election year, which means brands will increasingly feel pressure to pull away from putting their purpose front and center, out of fear of being cancelled. From holding off on campaigns supporting causes, to doubling down on block lists that pull funds away from journalism, the fear of getting it “wrong” is seemingly everywhere—with inaction set to become the norm. But positive action is a greater opportunity than ever, with interactivity of digital channels helping brands connect and engage with audiences in meaningful and authentic ways. Amy Williams, CEO of Good-Loop shares the case for making this year the year of good through digital, detailing action-forward best practices brands of all kinds can employ to better connect with consumers during a year which will be exciting, but also polarizing.

Amy Williams , Founder & CEO, Good-Loop

11:45
The Joy of Elections

In the heat of the 2024 UK general election campaign, LBC presenter and former Prime Ministerial adviser Tom Swarbrick delivers his incisive analysis of the election so far. In this session, Tom will evaluate current polling, assess the state of the main parties, offer insights into what the coming week holds for their campaigns, and offer his predictions for what will happen on 4 July.

Tom Swarbrick, Drivetime Presenter, LBC, Global

12:00
The Joy of Trust

Extensive research by UK advertising thinktank, Credos, shows that creative quality is the number one driver of trust. In other words, the more enjoyable your ad, the greater the joy you can create. In this session Stephen will share more about the Advertising Association’s new Value of Trust report, and why creating joy in the advertising experience is central to achieving the best results for your business and for the future success of the advertising industry.

Stephen Woodford, CEO, The Advertising Association

12:15
The Joy of Connection

In this current decade of restless change, conflict and disruption, people are needing moments of joy and connection more than ever before. The media industry, with its platform, reach and influence, should be at the forefront to provide this – but does it? In this session we will explore the importance of connection, why it’s under threat, and how innovation and AI is changing things. With the help of a very special guest, the session will explore ideas, insight and wisdom on how to maximise the joy of connection in a digital media landscape, to supercharge a bright future.
