IAB Europe Transparency and Consent Framework Update - August 2018
The IAB Europe Transparency and Consent Framework, developed by the industry to help support GDPR compliance, has been up and running for several months now. You can find out more about what it is and how it can help your company in our short guide.
Here’s an update for you on what’s ahead for the Framework to make sure it’s working well for the industry, and some of the improvements that are planned.
-
Measuring take-up: we know the numbers of registered CMPs (175) and vendors (500, and growing steadily). Publishers don’t have to register to use the Framework, so there aren’t figures for how many are using it. IAB Europe is running some surveys in the next few weeks to collect this information and find out more about how companies are using the Framework in practice (such as their approach to the user interface).
-
New functionality for publishers: an addition to the technical specification is due next month to improve how the Framework supports the ‘legitimate interest’ legal basis and give publishers more control over how the data they collect is used. Publishers will be able to manage the purposes for which vendors can process this data and the legal basis they use to do so. The policies that underpin the Framework are being updated to reflect this addition – once that’s complete the specification will be released.
-
Education: IAB Europe is developing some accessible guides to help companies understand the requirements of the Framework, such as what activity is and isn’t permitted within it, and to help them implement it properly.
-
Compliance: in the longer-term IAB Europe wants to ensure that the Framework is being used in line with the policies and terms and conditions that registered companies commit to. This work will focus first on CMPs, as they are the ‘gateway’ to the system.
-
Talking to regulators: IAB Europe along with members of the Framework Steering Group have been meeting with Data Protection Authorities (the regulators who are responsible for enforcing GDPR) across Europe. Their feedback will inform further improvements to the Framework.
Whether you’re new to the Framework or would like a refresh, IAB Europe is hosting a webinar to give a complete, detailed overview on 25 September. Register here
